A 3D model of an Ottoman chichak, the combat helmet of the sipahi heavy cavalry. The chichak has a rounded - often fluted - bowl forged from a single plate and tapering to a finial, with a fixed peak carrying a sliding nasal bar, hinged ear-flaps and a flared neck guard. Fine examples are decorated with gold koftgari and Quranic inscriptions invoking divine protection.

Historical context

The chichak emerged in the 15th century and matured through the 16th, worn by the sipahi heavy cavalry. Its sliding nasal, ear-flaps and neck-guard balanced protection with vision and mobility for mounted combat; the European "zischagge" is a Germanisation of the Turkish name, and related forms reached Mughal India.
